“Every act of creation is first an act of destruction

Pablo Picasso

Fascinated by the relationship between the past and present, Routley’s work juxtaposes the vibrancy of life itself with things that are ostensibly perceived as dying and worthless. His mixed medium paintings incorporate and elevate found and discarded materials, whose histories fuse with his work.

Born and raised in London, Routley trained in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and Chelsea College of Arts where he showed at numerous shows and exhibitions. Disillusioned by the politics of the then current contemporary art scene, he ceased to create work. It is with newfound zeal he has resumed work, trying to make sense of the world on a personal and universal level.

Routley’s work references trauma, loss, addiction and depression, which contrast an underlying sense of hope and resurrection and is a vehicle for his desire to reconcile the wreckage of the past with the present and the future.
